    How Does Therapy Work?

Therapy, whether individual or for couples, is a deeply personal experience. Therefore your therapy process will be completely unique and customized to your needs.

My therapy process always begins with awareness and is always collaborative. You are the expert in you. I am the expert in listening to you and helping you to define your needs and the goals you would like to set for yourself. We will also work to develop awareness of the barriers you experience in reaching your goals and any underlying factors that impact your life.

As we progress, I will share with your information and resources to help you understand your own experience and then we will develop custom tailored skills and interventions to help you create change in a practical and attainable way. These concepts and skills will be based in well-founded and researched areas of psychology, family therapy and neurobiology. It is my hope that they will help you develop a stronger connection in your mind, body and emotional experience as well as your relationship with those around you.

Therapy with me is as much about developing mental wellness as it is about reducing symptoms associated with mental illness. Concurrent to any work focused on your problems, we will also incorporate a healthy dose of positive psychology so that we maintain awareness of your strengths and what is going right.

This is only a brief explanation of what you might expect in our work together. Whether you’re new to therapy or experienced, I understand that many feel some uncertainty or have questions. Please feel free to reach out so I can address them person-to-person.

    Individual Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy can be a significantly rewarding and life-changing experience. However, it is not always easy. Please know that you will be met with caring and compassion in a safe and calm atmosphere where you will be accepted unconditionally. I’m here, ready to listen to and understand you at your core.

I most commonly help individuals address anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and situational life stressors. If you find yourself constantly worried or overwhelmed, consumed with a busy, negative or self critical mind, or bothered by intrusive thoughts about the past or future, I’m here to help.

With some understanding of how your mind and emotions work together to create your life experience and the development of mental discipline, I am confident that you can overcome any obstacles that stand in the way of achieving the life that you want for yourself.

And if you’re not sure what you want for your life, we can work on that too. When our time together is complete, it is my hope that you will not only know who you are, but feel empowered in your identity and be ready to thrive in your life.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a specific treatment modality for treating trauma, anxiety and depression. I have been trained in and practicing EMDR since 2017 and have found it an invaluable tool in helping my clients to heal from past traumatic and emotional wounds that carry over into their present lives.

As a brain-based modality, EMDR can help you to reprocess past experiences deep within the neural network of your brain allowing for quick and lasting change. It focuses both on changing core beliefs about yourself and emotions while also rewiring traumatic memories that are barriers to healthy functioning.

EMDR can be a stand-alone treatment approach or my be incorporated as part of individual psychotherapy. We will assess your need together and decide what is right for you.

In light of living with COVID-19, Telehealth is now an accessible and viable option for therapy work. While I would love to meet you in person, I would love to help you reach your goals even more. For this reason, I offer in-person or TeleHealth session at your discretion and am happy to mix and match whichever format works best for you.
